Ferries in and from Crete
Crete may be an island, but that certainly doesn't mean you have to stay there. In fact, taking a ferry is one of the best ways to discover even more of Greece. Whether you're dreaming of a day trip to Santorini, planning an island hopping adventure through the Cyclades, or looking to explore hidden gems along Crete's south coast, ferries make it easy.
What many visitors don't realise is that ferries in Crete are not only used for travelling to other islands. Some of the island's most beautiful destinations can only be reached by boat.
Using Ferryscanner, you can easily compare routes, departure times, and prices from different ferry companies, all in one place. It is a simple way to find the best option for your trip.
Why Travel by Ferry?
A ferry journey is much more than simply getting from one destination to another. It becomes part of the experience itself. As the coastline slowly disappears behind you and a new island appears on the horizon, you'll immediately get that unmistakable Greek island feeling.
Ferries also offer a great deal of flexibility. You can easily combine multiple destinations, take a day trip, or visit places that are difficult to reach by car.
Ferries Within Crete
Several ferry routes operate along Crete's south coast, connecting small seaside villages. In our opinion, these are some of the most beautiful boat trips on the island. You'll sail past dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and villages that seem untouched by time.
Loutro
Loutro is without doubt one of our favourite places in Crete. This small whitewashed village sits between the mountains and the Libyan Sea and cannot be reached by car.
Most visitors take the ferry from Chora Sfakion to Loutro. The crossing is short, but the moment you arrive, it feels as though you've stepped onto a tiny Greek island. There is no traffic, the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed, and the crystal clear water is right on your doorstep.
Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli lies at the exit of the famous Samaria Gorge and serves as the finishing point for many hikers completing the gorge.
From here, ferries connect to several destinations along the south coast, including Chora Sfakion, Sougia, and Paleochora.
Sougia
Sougia is one of those places that visitors often fall in love with. This peaceful seaside village is surrounded by mountains and nature, offering a laid back atmosphere far away from the crowds.
Taking the ferry is a wonderful way to reach Sougia or combine it with other destinations along the south coast.
Paleochora
Located in the southwest of Crete, Paleochora is a relaxed coastal town known for its beautiful beaches, welcoming tavernas, and authentic atmosphere.
During the season, ferries connect Paleochora with several other villages along the south coast.
Popular Ferry Routes from Crete
Besides local ferry connections, Crete is also an excellent gateway to many other Greek islands.
Santorini
For many travellers, a visit to Santorini is high on the bucket list.
Fast ferries depart from Heraklion and reach the island in around two hours. It is a great option for a day trip, but also ideal if you're planning to combine multiple islands during your holiday.
During the summer months, seasonal ferry services may also operate from Rethymno.
Athens
Regular ferries connect both Heraklion and Chania with Athens.
The overnight services are especially popular. You leave Crete in the evening and arrive on the Greek mainland the following morning.
The Cyclades
Islands such as Naxos, Paros, Ios, and Mykonos are all accessible from Crete during the summer season.
Perfect for anyone who loves island hopping.
Gavdos
South of Crete lies Gavdos, the southernmost inhabited island in Europe.
Life here revolves around simplicity, nature, and tranquillity. It's a unique destination for travellers looking to escape the busier side of Greece.
Check Ferries
From and Around Crete

- Bring a light sweater or jacket for the indoor areas of the ferry.
- Always check the latest departure times, especially during periods of strong winds.
- Travelling with a rental car? Check in advance whether your rental company allows the vehicle on the ferry.
